The Ultimate Freezer Hack for Whole Grains (and Pulses)

Did you know that you can batch cook whole grains, freeze them in a block, and then simply regenerate what you need by pouring over boiled water?

It’s much cheaper than buying the pouches that typically also contain industrially processed oils, which aren’t great for you at all.

This is an incredibly simple and smart hack you can use to get more whole grains into your meals.

Whole grains contain lots of fibre and when combined with a legume typically will give you all nine essential amino acids (protein building blocks) in the right balance.

We recommend trying to get a variety of whole grains into your meal such as barley, spelt, emmer, quinoa, buck wheat and rye.

Simply boil 500 grams at a time following the instructions on the pack, strain and freeze in a suitably sized container.

Once frozen you get the block out of the container by running warm water over the bottom of it until the block loosens. Then put the block in a bowl and pour over boiling hot water until you have the desired quantity of grain.

Put the rest back in the container and into the freezer. Easy.

Works with all pulses too.
