Why I recommend eating more pulses as a nutritionist

Uta Boellinger, Cannelle Nutrition

Pulses – the unsung heroes of the food universe. As a nutritionist on a mission, I'm here to spill the beans (and lentils and chickpeas) on why you should be loading up your plate with these tiny nutrition powerhouses.

I’m Uta, a BANT Registered Nutritionist based in Hove. I often recommend that my clients include more pulses in their diet and here is why.

Protein Punch:

First things first, let's talk protein. Pulses are your go-to source for plant-based protein goodness. Whether you're vegetarian or vegan or just looking to diversify your protein intake, pulses have got your back and are a much better option than heavily processed meat replacements.

Fibre Fiesta for Gut Happiness:

Who doesn't love a happy gut? Pulses bring plenty of fibre to the table, promoting digestive health and keeping you feeling full and fabulous. Bid farewell to those pesky hunger pangs and embrace the satisfaction that comes with a diet rich in fibre. Feed your gut microbiome and supporting healthy digestion. Your stomach will thank you!

These little wonders are also low in fat and high in complex carbohydrates, providing a steady release of energy to keep you fuelled throughout the day.

Balancing Act for Hormones – Ladies, Listen Up!:

Now, let's talk hormones, ladies. Pulses play a starring role in maintaining hormonal balance, especially for women. Packed with iron and zinc, these legumes are essential for keeping those hormone levels in check. Iron, your ally during that time of the month, fights off anaemia, while the high fibre content works its magic on oestrogen regulation.

Versatility Unleashed:

Pulses are the true champions of adaptability in the kitchen. They can play the lead role in a variety of dishes, from hearty stews to zesty salads and everything in between. Their mild flavour profile makes them the perfect canvas for a culinary masterpiece, allowing you to infuse your favourite herbs, spices, and sauces. Plus, they come in various forms – dried or canned – making them a pantry staple that's always ready to elevate your cooking game, no matter the time constraints.
